Store samples don't come without some problems; usually, they will need to risk a trip to the dry cleaners, and often are missing buttons, embellishments, and even entire elements (such as a sash or bolero). This must be accounted for in your dress budget when purchasing a sample or closeout gown! Cleaning costs may amount to $150 or more, and replacing a bolero or sash could be $20 - $300 or more. They may have tears or snags that are not repairable, which should also be evaluated (can it be covered with a brooch, can that part be completely replaced, or is it not noticeable?)
Store samples can be bought at a local bridal salon, and many can be found on websites such as www.Ebay.com. They are generally sold at a substantial discount, although popular styles and expensive designer gowns will go for much more. High-end bridal salons are generally the best place to look for samples in fabulous condition with the heftiest discounts; they tend to take the best care of both their brides, and their sample stock!
Also included on this page are closeout gowns that were discontinued and offered at a steep discount. Occasionally a bridal salon will have a bride cancel an order, have a sample that never comes out of the stock room, or receive overstock from the designer. Depending on the style, the salon will offer it at a fabulous price and the gown will be new with tags! A merchantable second is a gown that came from the factory with a minor flaw (such as dirt inside the hem or a tag sewn in with the wrong size) that can't be sold as a perfect, first rate gown.
Unlike purchasing a new gown, store samples are usually brought home and stored there. I recommend storing your gown laid out flat (on or under a guest bed, that sort of thing) wrapped in a clean white sheet that is free of fabric softener/bleach/etc (perhaps a new one that has been through a wash cycle with no soap). Storing your gown in a dress bag may cause the fabric to yellow, and laying it flat will relieve pressure on the bodice (which has spent the majority of it's life on a hanger and may be slightly stretched out!). Another fabulous way to store a gown is covered in a white sheet on a mannequin that is your size. If you have a seamstress in the family, this may be possible. A good cleaning and alterations specialist will stuff your gown with a paper bodice and it can also be stored that way. Otherwise, store it flat!
Because it may be difficult to ignore the dress and not put it on everyday, don't get it cleaned until you know that you will leave it alone! Another important piece of advice: get it cleaned WELL in advance of the wedding (5-6 months) so that you can replace it if something goes wrong. Research you options for getting the dress cleaned: don't take it to the neighborhood dry cleaners unless they have experience and a fabulous reputation for restoring wedding gowns. This is especially important if your gown has lace, is made of cheaper quality polyester satin, or if the gown is silk.
You may also need to research local seamstresses for alterations: get recommendations and make sure the seamstress you choose has experience with wedding attire. Ask your local board for dry cleaner recommendations, and remember that not all store gowns are in good enough shape to be 'resurrected'. I've seen some in REALLY bad condition, others practically new.
